Safe and energy efficient use of an apartment sauna

As a tenant you are responsible for the fire safety of the apartment sauna, and you can ensure it by using the sauna correctly. And by using the sauna energy-efficiently, you’ll notice a positive impact on your electricity bill.

Fire safety

The sauna must not be used for storing things that do not belong there. The sauna is intended for sauna bathing, not for storage or laundry drying.

You must take into account the following if there is a sauna in your apartment:

  • Do not dry your laundry in the sauna even when the sauna stove is off.
  • When heating the sauna, ensure that there is nothing flammable in the sauna or on the benches.
  • After you finish sauna bathing, switch off the stove from its control panel.
  • If you notice anything wrong with the sauna stove, please report the fault to the maintenance company. Do not use a faulty stove.

If the sauna stove is switched on accidentally, any materials not belonging to the sauna may be set on fire. If you wish, you can switch off the fuse for the sauna stove in the apartment’s fuse box, so the stove cannot heat up accidentally. The sauna must not be used for other purposes even if the fuse has been switched off.

Energy efficient use of sauna

An electric sauna stove is the largest electricity consumer in the home. The number of sauna sessions, their duration, and the temperature directly affect electricity consumption and the electricity bill. More than 50% of the electricity is used to preheat the sauna, so it’s worth heating the sauna at once for the whole family.

With these tips, you can reduce energy consumption:

  • Reduce the ventilation of the sauna room when you start heating it.
  • Heat the sauna for the whole group at one time.
  • Enter the sauna as soon as it’s ready.
  • A temperature of 70–80 °C is sufficient. Heating to 100 °C increases electricity consumption by 20–30%.
  • Turn off the sauna stove after bathing. Residual heat will dry the sauna.
  • Increase ventilation at the end.
  • Replace sauna stones regularly.
