Smoke detector installations start in February
We will ensure by the end of 2025 that all apartments, business premises and common areas have a sufficient number of working smoke detectors and that they are installed in compliance with the law.
Building-specific installation schedules
The installations will start in February. The specific schedule and details will be informed separately for each building. Notices will be distributed to apartments 2–3 weeks before the scheduled installation date.
The installations will be carried out during weekday working hours. Installing smoke detectors will take approximately 15–30 minutes per apartment. You may stay at home during the installation. If you are not at home, the smoke detector installer will enter your apartment using a master key.
All installers will carry a photo ID that shows their name, job title and employer. They will also wear identifiable work uniforms.
As part of the installation, a sticker will be placed on the inside of the apartment’s front door. This sticker will give information about the testing of the smoke detector and the tenant’s responsibilities.
Installations will not take place in all buildings
We have reviewed the types of existing smoke detectors in the buildings. Smoke detectors will not be replaced if we have found that they are functional and already comply with the law. Special detectors installed by Disability Services in some apartments will also not be replaced.
Tenant’s responsibility – testing the smoke detector and reporting faults
The changes to the Rescue Act mean that the installation and maintenance of smoke detectors will become the building owner’s responsibility at the beginning of 2026. However, tenants will still be required to test their smoke detectors regularly.
- Test the smoke detector once a month and after you have been away for a long time.
- If the smoke detector does not work, report the fault immediately to the maintenance company.
- Remember: Smoke detectors must not be moved, removed or damaged (e.g. by painting them).
Functional smoke detectors are an important part of fire safety in our buildings.
